Butchers have been working on the site of the Market House in the centre of Bridport for something like 750 years.
Framptons of Bridport’s modern, light and airy shop is underneath Bridport’s Grade 1 listed Town Hall at the centre of this traditional market town – look out for the clock-tower and beneath it you will find Framptons!
It is based on the site of the old butchers’ market, known as Butcher Row or the ‘Shambles’.
Look closely in the stonework in the walls of Framptons of Bridport shop and you can still see old wooden blocks, where hooks held canopies in place over the stalls, when it was open to the elements.
When the Town Hall was built in 1786, the arches in front of the shop led to a covered market and old maps show where some 39 butchers’ stalls were licensed to trade on market days.
